Tech drops match against Pitt 4-1

BLACKSBURG, -- Virginia Tech came up short in the ACC opener against Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 16, falling 4-1 at Thompson Field.

 Virginia Tech's record drops to 6-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in ACC play. 

How it Happened

Pitt (8-1) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the third minute with a goal by Landy Mertz. 

The Hokies responded with a penalty kick goal from Emmalee McCarter in the 39th minute.

Pittsburgh went ahead 2-1 on Katie Zailski's 40th-minute goal, followed by a third goal in the 41st-minute goal. 

The Panthers came out strong in the second half, increasing their lead 4-1 with a goal in the 47th minute. 

Game Notes

  • Emmalee McCarter scored her first goal of the season, penalty kick. 
  • Virginia Tech held a slight shot advantage throughout the match 19-15. 
  • Lauren Hargrove piled up eight saves for the Hokies out of 12.
