BLACKSBURG, Va. --The Virginia Tech volleyball team opened the Virginia Tech Classic with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) against the Norfolk State Spartans Thursday at home in Cassell Coliseum.
The non-conference victory boosted the Hokies' overall record to 6-4 on the season. The Spartans fall to 0-9.
The Hokies were led by a double-double from Cera Powell, who registered 14 kills and 10 digs on the day. Sydney Petersen also added 12 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Maddie Slagle chipped in for with 18 digs, in addition to five blocks from Anabel Zier.

How It Happened
The Hokies jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-17. Virginia Tech never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13. The Hokie block got going early as Tech put up four blocks, led by Zier with four block assists. Francis and Petersen led the offense with four kills apiece to open the match and Slagle and Brie Postema recorded six digs.
Virginia Tech won set two 25-17 to open up a 2-0 lead. The Hokies took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. The Hokies opened its biggest lead of the stanza, eight points, to close out the set, totaling 18 kills along the way. The Hokies hit .378, with Petersen leading the way hitting a perfect 1.000. She went 6-for-6 in total attempts in the second set. Zier also added three kills, hitting .500.
Completing the sweep, the Hokies took the third set 25-21. Powell led the charge offensively, recording eight kills in the third set to close out the match. Freshman Jordan Hallman got in on the action, recording her first career kill. Hanna Borer, who led the match with 24 assists, recorded eight of them in the third set.
The Hokies will now take on Western Carolina tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. The Catamounts defeated App State 3-2 to open the tournament.
