Tech downs Northern Colorado, 5-2

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech took control of the pitch in a 5-2 win against Northern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Thompson Field. The Hokies' win improves their record to 6-1-1 overall.

Freshman Taylor Price scored her fifth goal of the season and is now tied with Tori Powell for lead scorer on the team. The Bears leave Blacksburg having lost their first two games of the season, both in Virginia. The Bears drop to an overall record of 4-2-2. 

How it Happened

The Hokies led from start to finish as Natalie Mitchell scored the first goal of the game in the 20th-minute, assisted by Taylor Price

Sophie Maltese scored the second goal of the match with an assist from Emmalee McCarter passing it in to Maltese from the far outside corner. Tech ended the first half 2-0 over the Bears. 

Virginia Tech gained a 3-0 lead when Price tallied her fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute, lodging the ball 19-yards from within the arc and into the back of the net. 

Emma Pelkowski scored the Hokies' fourth goal of the game with an assist from Mitchell and Powell. The Bears refused to go home without a goal, striking twice within one minute in the second half. 

Tech closed out the game with Allie George scoring her first goal of the season in the 85th minute. 

Game Notes

  • Lauren Hargrove recorded two saves for the Hokies out of nine total Bears shots.
  • Virginia Tech made 27 shots, 11 on goal.
  • Price is tied with Powell with 5 goals this season 
  • Mitchell scored the first goal of the game in two consecutive games.  

UP NEXT

The Hokies will look to open conference play on Thursday in a match against Pitt at Thompson Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and the game will be carried on ACC Network Extra.
