BLACKSBURG – After playing a daunting pair of road contests to open the 2022 season, Virginia Tech men's soccer starts its home slate at 7 p.m. on Friday night against Radford at Thompson Field.

THE SERIES

  • The New River Rock is on the line in Friday's contest. Tech and Radford met 35 times between 1975 and 2012, but the derby has been on hold since 2012. 
  • Virginia Tech leads the series 22-12-2, including seven wins in the last 10 meetings.
  • Kai Marshall's 60th-minute goal powered the Hokies past Radford in the last meeting on Oct. 23, 2012.
  • The Hokies are 16-2 against the Highlanders at home. Radford's last win in Blacksburg came from a 2-0 result on Sept. 5, 2000.

 
LAST TIME OUT

  • Tech fell 1-0 to No. 23 UCLA on Aug. 28 in Los Angeles, Calif. For the second time this season, the Hokies went into the break on the road tied 0-0. The Bruins found a late winner in the 81st minute that dropped Virginia Tech to 0-2 on the season. 
  • Misei Yoshizawa made his first career start for the Hokies.

 
A WIN WOULD…

  • Be Mike Brizendine's 100th career win as head coach of Virginia Tech.
  • Be Virginia Tech's eighth-straight non-conference regular season win at home. Tech last fell to a non-conference opponent at Thompson Field on Oct. 2, 2018.

 
SCOUTING RADFORD

  • The Highlanders are 0-2 after the first week of play with road losses against Liberty (3-0) and Mount St. Mary's (4-1).
  • Radford struck first against Mount St. Mary's in the 44th minute, but conceded four goals in the final 25 minutes of play to suffer its second defeat of the season.
  • Five newcomers have started both games for the Highlanders: Samuel Schwarz, Jared Dubose, James Barrett, James Gardev and Alex Kryazhev.
