Hokies to face Old Dominion on Thursday

NORFOLK, VA –The undefeated Virginia Tech women's soccer team will travel to Norfolk, Va. on Thursday, Sept. 1, when the Hokies will take on the Monarchs in a non-conference match at 6:00 p.m. Thursday match against Old Dominion will air live on ESPN+

• Hokies Starting off Strong (3-0-1): Virginia Tech continues to dominate the non-conference competition having most recently taken down Elon 5-1 at Rudd Field.
The Hokies will take on the Monarchs for the 12th time in program history having last defeated Old Dominion in 2004 with a score of 3-1. Tech leads the series against Old Dominion 9-2. Old Dominion was picked to finish first in the Sun Belt Conference – East Division preseason poll. The Hokies have remained unbeaten by a Sun Belt Conference school since 2008.

• Tough Start for Old Dominion (0-3-0): The Monarchs remain scoreless after three games this season, giving up three goals to East Carolina on Sunday. Old Dominion's goalkeeper Erin Jones is currently averaging three saves per game allowing five goals in three games. Carla Morich leads the Monarchs in shots this season averaging 2.67 shots per game. Morich led her team in assists (6), points (16), and shots (52) during the 2021 season.
 
• Controlling the Shots:  The Hokies continue to put pressure on their opponents in the second half outscoring Elon three to one in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Natalie Mitchell scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick to the far-left side of the net 61 minutes into the game. Ella Ciardullo fought until the end, scoring her first goal of the season in the 84th minute of the match. The Hokies are currently averaging 19 shots per game with 57.89 percent of all shots taken in the second half. The Hokies have won two games this season in the final 45 minutes.
 
• Leaders in the ACC: Freshman Taylor Price continues to lead the flock scoring her third goal of the season at Elon. Price is ranked first in the ACC among freshmen, and tied for fourth among all student-athletes. Price twice scored the first goal of the game this season helping the Hokies claim victory. Freshman Natalie Mitchell and sophomore Lauren Gogal are tied for second in the ACC with three assists. Goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove clocked in 300 minutes before a ball made its way past her and into the net. Hargrove moves to sixth in the ACC with a saving percentage of 88.9.
 
UP NEXT 
• The Hokies will next host Charlotte on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 5:00 p.m. The Hokies last played Charlotte in 2021, winning 2-1 at Transamerica Field.
