Hokie ClubBuilding off its run to the second round of the 2021 NCAA tournament, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team is beyond proud to welcome each and every member of its 2022 signing class as part of the next generation in its program-long tradition of family. During the weeks to come, Tech will eagerly introduce its newest class of Hokies one by one as the program excitingly looks forward to its return to the pitch.
BLACKSBURG – Maysen Nelson is a five-foot-eight defensive back who hails from Woodbridge, Virginia, where she was a 2022 graduate of Charles J. Colgan Senior High School in nearby Manassas. A four-year academy defender at The St. James FC Virginia (TSJFCV), she competed on the club's 2021 squad that advanced to the Girls Academy Under-17 national championship match.
"We are extremely excited to add Maysen to our group," said head coach Chugger Adair. "She is going to be a wonderful addition to our team.
"Maysen has the ability to play multiple positions along the back line, especially at center back. She is a quality position player who can play outside and can also help us snuff out our opponents' attack. We are excited to have her join our family!"
Tasked with central defending at TSJFCV, Nelson trained at center back under coaches Christian Cziommer and Bobby Puppione, building early chemistry with her fellow 2022 Tech newcomers, Courtney Andersen and Taylor Price. During the club's run to the 2018-19 Under-15 Atlantic Division championship, Nelson contributed to the defensive effort that helped TSJFCV sport a +51 goal differential, conceding 35 times across 32 league matches.
Two seasons later, Nelson co-led TSJFCV to the inaugural 2020-21 Girls Academy Mid-Atlantic Conference title before joining Andersen and Price on the club's 2021 side that advanced to the U-17 national championship match. There, the trio of first-year Hokies finished runner-up to Nationals Blue, the club home of Tech newcomer Emma Stanley.
Nelson – who was born in Fairfax, Virginia, to her parents, Brad and Stacey – has a younger sister, Chloe. She is eager to study human development at Virginia Tech with aspirations of working as a physical therapist.
What schools did you consider? "South Carolina and Virginia Tech."
Why Virginia Tech? "I chose Virginia Tech because I loved everything about the campus and the atmosphere that it provides for its students. It has an excellent academic reputation and a highly competitive athletic department."
What was your favorite takeaway from your visit to Blacksburg? "My favorite thing about my visit was the family-like atmosphere here and how I was able to bond with my future teammates."
What do you like about the Tech women's soccer program? "I love the coaching, the style of play and the competitiveness of the ACC."
What are your soccer strengths? "My strengths are my vocal leadership, how I can break lines, my ball distribution and my one-on-one defending."
Who is your favorite professional player? "My favorite professional player is Christian Pulisic. I love his explosiveness and his creativity."
What is your most memorable soccer moment? "My most memorable moment would have to be last summer when my club team (TSJFCV) played in the 2021 Girls Academy national championship match. We had worked so hard all year long, so making it there was such a special moment for us."
What are you interested in studying at Virginia Tech? "I plan to major in human development and would like to become a physical therapist."
What is one thing you would want Tech fans to know about you? "I love wakeboarding and spending my summers on the lake."
