Hokie ClubSCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Virginia Tech's Emily Mahar wrapped up her record-setting career in the third round of the 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Championship on Sunday. She carded a three-day total of 10-over 226 (76-72-78) to tie for 63rd.
Mahar, a former Arizona resident, competed in the national championship for the second straight season. The Hokies advanced as a team to nationals last year.
The Brisbane, Australia native logged four birdies and an eagle over her three days. Her eagle came during the second round when she stuck her approach to seven feet and drained the putt.
Mahar competed as an individual – one of 12 who advanced out of regionals. The graduate student fired a 1-under 212 (72-71-69) to finish runner-up at the Ann Arbor Regional last week in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Following Sunday's third round, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will have one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the team national championship to be decided May 25.
Top-ranked Stanford currently leads the team race at even-par 864, nine shots clear of second-ranked Oregon.
The Cardinal also have the individual leader, Rose Zhang, who is 9-under-par through 54 holes. The freshman carries a seven-shot advantage into the final round of stroke play on Monday.
