No. 4/5 Hokies take down No. 2/3 Florida State 6-3 in extras

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The No. 4/5 Virginia Tech Hokies took down No. 2/3 Florida State Friday evening, defeating the Seminoles 6-3 in extra innings. Tech was led by three home runs and great pitching from senior Keely Rochard.

Rochard stuck out 14 Florida State hitters over nine innings of work to help lead the Hokies past the Seminoles 6-3.

In addition to her 14 strikeouts, Rochard (15-2) threw nine innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits and walking five for Virginia Tech (28-4, 12-0 ACC).

Offensively, the Hokies were led by junior Meredith Slaw, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two home runs and three RBI. Senior Darby Trull compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Addy Greene also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Virginia Tech plated two runs when Slaw left the yard with junior Jayme Bailey aboard.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when the Hokies got going again on offense. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Slaw's leadoff home run off of senior Kathryn Sandercock, which brought the Hokies lead to 3-2.

Florida State evened the ballgame at three before Virginia Tech reclaimed a 6-3 advantage in the ninth inning. The Hokies notched three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run homer from Trull. The score remained 6-3 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech held on for the win.
