RALEIGH, N.C. — The Virginia Tech women's golf team came up short in its fifth-place match vs. 16th-ranked and No. 2 seed Florida State on the final day of the Wolfpack Match Play, which was hosted by NC State at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Becca DiNunzio clinched the lone point on the day for the Hokies, who dropped a 4-1 result to the Seminoles. The outcome was much closer than the final score indicates. Two other matches came down to the 18th hole.
Tech, the No. 4 seed in the event, opened with a 3-2 setback to No. 5 seed Louisville in Sunday's quarterfinals. Ginnie Lee and Alyssa Montgomery registered a pair of 1-up victories against the Cardinals.
In the afternoon session, the Hokies bounced back with a 3-1-1 decision over No. 8 seed Notre Dame. Symone Henriques, Kyrsten Shawah and Montgomery delivered Tech's three points against the Fighting Irish.
South Carolina, the top seed in the event, defeated North Carolina in the championship match, 4-1. NC State edged Louisville in the third-place match by a 3-2 margin, while Duke claimed a 4-0-1 decision against Notre Dame in the seventh-place match.
The Hokies now turn their attention to the ACC Women's Golf Championship next week in Pawleys Island, S.C. Thursday and Friday will feature 54 holes of stroke play with the top four teams advancing to match play over the weekend. Tech finished a program-best fifth at last season's championship.
