BRIGHTON, Mass. – With Cade Hunter clearing the bases courtesy of his three-RBI double during the top of the seventh inning on Sunday, the No. 8 Virginia Tech baseball team broke away from its 3-3 tie with Boston College on its way to earning the 6-4 victory at Harrington Athletics Village.
Hunter went 2-for-4 with two doubles to lead Virginia Tech (28-9, 12-7 ACC), which has now won 18 of its last 21 games. The third-year backstop combined to catch 11 strikeouts from starter Jordan Geber (five) and reliever Henry Weycker (six), both of whom toed the rubber for four-plus innings apiece.
Tech jutted out to the 1-0 lead during the top of the third inning without swinging a hit as Sam Tackett walked, took two bases on consecutive battery miscues and scored on Nick Biddison's sacrifice fly. Jack Hurley later carried the opening pitch of the fourth inning to left field for the Hokies' first hit of the day, doubling, despite BC reliever Charlie Coon leaving Hurley stranded at second base while dialing up three straight outs.
Geber collected nine outs from the first 11 batters he faced, but ran into trouble for the first time during the bottom of the fourth inning. After Boston College (15-25, 3-18 ACC) had led off with back-to-back singles by Luke Gold and Joe Vetrano, Tech infielder Christian Martin overthrew Lucas Donlon at first base during a potential double play, allowing Gold to score as the game's tying run.
Biddison triggered the Hokies' two-out rally during the fifth inning that put Tech back in control. After the Hokies' leadoff man had singled to left field, Gavin Cross drew his second of two walks, putting a second duck aboard for Tanner Schobel to drive home with his two-RBI double down the left field line.
BC knotted the game at 3-3 immediately during the bottom of the fifth inning. Between three walks having been issued by Geber and Weycker, Travis Honeyman threaded an RBI single through the right side while Vertrano beat out the potential inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play (as called safe after review).
Martin redeemed himself during the top of the seventh inning, singling to begin Tech's march to victory. Staging another two-out rally for the Hokies, Schobel and Hurley both drew walks prior to Hunter delivering the eventual game-winning double off the wall in right center.
Parker Landwehr hit a solo homer for the Eagles during the bottom of the eighth inning – the final base runner Weycker conceded during his fifth relief victory of the season.
