No. 2/3 Hokies walk off Virginia to win series

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Meredith Slaw and senior Mackenzie Lawter were key in the No. 2/3 Hokies walk-off win over Virginia in eight innings. Slaw came through with four RBI on the day, including a home run to tie the ballgame back up in the bottom of the eighth. Lawter came through with a base hit to score Maddy Federico to complete the series win over the Cavaliers.

Senior Keely Rochard (18-2) received the win in the circle, fanning eight Virginia hitters over eight innings of work to help lead Tech over Virginia.

Offensively, the Hokies were paced by junior Meredith Slaw, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two home runs and four RBI. Junior Morgan Overaitis got the start in right field, going 2-for-2 with a double and two walks. Sophomore Cameron Fagan also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate as well as scoring a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 3-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Slaw put Virginia Tech on the board with a leadoff home run off junior Morgan Murphy.

The Hokies kept the Cavaliers off the board before tying it up in the fifth. Virginia Tech picked up two runs when a single from Slaw brought home Fagan and sophomore Emma Yates, which brought the score level at 3-3.

Virginia then broke the tie and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth before Virginia Tech scored two runs in the bottom half of the eighth to grab the win, walking it off on an RBI single off the bat of Lawter.

GAME NOTES

» The Hokies got two home runs off the bat of Slaw.
» Virginia Tech got three-hit games from both Fagan and Slaw.
» Rochard struck out eight Cavaliers hitters.
» The Hokies power output was led by Slaw, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Slaw drove in four runs for Virginia Tech.
» The Hokies out-hit the Cavaliers at a 12-9 clip.
» Rochard limited Virginia to just 1-for-6 (.167) with runners in scoring position.
» Virginia was led offensively by junior Katie Goldberg, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
