BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 2/3 Virginia Tech softball team took a 5-3 setback Friday evening to even the series at one game apiece. Virginia scored five runs over four innings to take the win.
Senior Darby Trull led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double. Junior Kelsey Bennett also had a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Emma Ritter also helped out, going 1-for-3 for Virginia Tech with an RBI.
Emma Lemley (12-4) got the start in the circle for the Hokies, pitching all seven innings with eight strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the third inning. Bennett's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Virginia Tech.
The Cavaliers broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the seventh inning, when the Hokies got back on the scoreboard. Junior Morgan Overaitis came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Cavaliers. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
