BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football held its Spring Game, presented by PMSi, on Saturday and the Maroon Team ran away with it, earning a 26-10 victory over the White Team at Lane Stadium.
The Maroon Team outgained the White Team offensively 293-126 in total yards in the two-hour game, while each team had three sacks on the day. There were quite a few chunk plays, including eight runs and passes over 20 yards.
Two of the eight were big plays from quarterback Grant Wells to receiver Kaleb Smith, showing off their chemistry, with Smith grabbing both a 47-yard touchdown and a 51-yard touchdown in the first quarter. In one-on-one coverage, Smith beat his man both times and Wells threw two dimes right where they should be. Smith finished the day 103 receiving yards and three catches.
Quarterback Devin Farrell also played well, rushing for 41 yards and scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put it away.
For the White Team, it averaged an impressive 12.6 yards per play, but couldn't sustain it over the long haul, with scoring its lone touchdown in the final moment of the game. Quarterback Ben Locklear tossed a 7-yard touchdown to receiver Conner Dusenbury as time expired.
There were no turnovers on the day, but six Hokies turned in a sack, including Eli Adams, Norell Pollard, Wilfried Pene, TyJuan Garbutt, Gunner Givens and Keli Lawson. Defensive back Ny'Quee Hawkins and linebacker Keshon Artis each had a team-high five tackles.
