Women’s basketball sees growth, record-setting performances in 2021-22 season

The 2021-22 season for the Virginia Tech women's basketball team was spectacular, with the team going 23-10 overall and collecting a program record 13 ACC wins and the best all-time finish in the conference tying for third.

The Hokies competed in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament for the first time ever, beat five ranked teams for the first time in program history and made an NCAA Tournament appearance for the second straight season.

The Hokies went 8-1 in ACC games at Cassell Coliseum, including winning four straight games in eight days in February. That stretch included back-to-back wins over ranked opponents for the first time ever (No. 11 Georgia Tech and No. 24 UNC).  Overall, VT went 12-2 on Carilion Clinic Court, with the only losses coming to nationally ranked programs.

Virginia Tech scored a Carrier Dome record of 102 points in their 102-53 win over Syracuse which served as the largest margin of victory in an ACC game (49) in program history. On Dec. 30th, the Hokies beat No. 15 Duke by 22 points, the largest margin over a ranked team in program history. The Hokies also went 20-for-20 on FT during the Duke game breaking another program record for the most conversions without a miss.

Head Coach Kenny Brooks concluded his sixth season this year, where he led the program to their sixth consecutive winning season and to the postseason once again. Brooks won his 450th game as a head coach on Jan. 13th as the Hokies swept Duke for the first time ever. He now owns 124 wins at VT.

After an extraordinary season, several athletes earned postseason accolades. Aisha Sheppard became Virginia Tech's all-time leading scorer and made 96 3's which is the most in a single season at VT. Sheppard also owns the ACC's all-time 3-point FG record. She was a Second Team All-ACC honoree. Georgia Amoore became the first Hokie to earn First Team All-Tournament honors at the ACC Tournament and was also an Honorable Mention All-ACC athlete. Kayana Traylor and Sheppard were both All-Tournament athletes as well, marking the first time that the Hokies had three in a single year.

Center Elizabeth Kitley not only became the first Hokie to win ACC player of the year, but also the first woman in program history to make an AP All-America Team. Kitley scored 237 FGs which is the most in a single season at VT. Kitley also scored 42 points vs FGCU in the NCAA Tournament setting a program record and scoring the second most ever in the first round of the competition. She was also named the Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year.
