EVANS, Ga. — Virginia Tech women's golfer Emily Mahar fired a second consecutive 4-over 76 to post a 152 (+8) following Thursday's second round of the third annual Augusta National Women's Amateur. Second-round play was postponed seven and a half hours due to heavy rainfall at Champions Retreat, site of the event's first two rounds.
Mahar, who became the first Hokie to qualify and compete in one of the nation's top women's amateur events, entered the day tied for 39th. After making the turn in 3-over-par, Mahar bogeyed the par-4 second hole before rattling off back-to-back birdies at Nos. 3 and 4. Both birdies were credited to the fine wedge play by Mahar, who calmly sank both birdie opportunities. Despite gaining momentum, Mahar was unable to sustain it, finishing 2-over-par on her final five holes.
Mahar's group was one of three pairings able to complete Thursday's second round before play was suspended due to darkness. At the end of the day, a trio of golfers is tied atop the leaderboard. Beatrice Wallin, Amari Avery and Hailey Borja are tied at even-par.
Upon conclusion of the second round, which will resume Friday morning at Champions Retreat, the top 30 advancing players will compete at Augusta National Golf Club for Saturday's final round. All players in the field will play Augusta National on Friday for a practice round, including Mahar.
