BLACKSBURG – After nine spring ball practices, Virginia Tech football head coach Brent Pry and select coaches and players addressed the media on Wednesday during a press conference. Read what they had to say below.
HEAD COACH BRENT PRY
On his thoughts about the first full scrimmage of the spring:
"I thought it went pretty well. We had about 90 snaps. A lot of good work. Certainly not clean. But you hope to continue to establish the fundamentals and techniques that are important, as well as a general understanding of the offense, defense and special teams. And then you want to see a level of competing. So I think we made progress in all those areas Saturday. It's also your opportunity to continue to evaluate the roster. Some of the position moves we made and some that we're thinking about."

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR TYLER BOWEN
On the competition between quarterbacks Grant Wells and Jason Brown and their progress:
"I think it's been really competitive at multiple positions, but obviously especially that one and I've been pleased with both of those guys. I think they both bring a unique skill set to the table. They've both done things extremely well. They're battle tested, they know what it means. You know, you can see the clock in their head in the pocket and things like that. They know what it feels like to play at this level of football. So, I've been very impressed with both of them so far this spring."
QUARTERBACKS COACH BRAD GLENN
On how reps are split between quarterbacks:
"Well, like we talked about in the beginning, it was tough getting six guys reps. You know, we had to be creative with that early on, which I think we did a pretty good job of it. And kind of as we've gone along, we narrowed it down a little bit to maybe four guys during the scrimmage the other day getting reps. And with two guys, you know, Jason Brown and Grant Wells, getting the bulk of those reps, which you know, obviously, is still an open contest. We're nine practices in and still have two scrimmages to look at. So, we're still evaluating things every day."
QUARTERBACK CONNOR BLUMRICK
On potentially changing positions:
"You know, they came to me and asked me to do a little moving around, because they thought that's what was best for the team. It's on me just to kind of buy into that and do whatever is best for the team. So I'm excited about it. I'm doing some new things and having fun with it."
QUARTERBACK JASON BROWN
On the scrimmage from a quarterback's perspective:
"They didn't really throw anything new at us. It was just really stuff that we've been working on since really winter, because when we had our winter workouts, we would have a short little install period where we would get to run certain plays and what not. So, it wasn't really anything new because we've been working it for so long. It was pretty clean. Just going into Saturday, we don't really have any installs, just the stuff that we've had previously throughout the weekend and prior weeks to that. So it gives us a chance, a couple of days to study everything. Get everything that we need to know and get it down pat."
QUARTERBACK GRANT WELLS
On his performance in the scrimmage:
"Yeah, I thought I did well. Like you said, me and Jason are getting the majority of the reps right now. But yeah, I thought I did well. Last Saturday was pretty much the first big scrimmage. I think the first drive was like 15 plays. So you know, it's very game like, and I think we did pretty good as an offense as a whole."
