Virginia Tech takes down North Carolina 87-80 in overtime

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Emily Lytle put the Virginia Tech women's basketball team ahead for good with 2:30 to go the extra period to give the Hokies an 87-80 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels at Greensboro Coliseum Complex Friday.

The Hokies (23-8) had four players score in double figures, led by Georgia Amoore, who had 22 points and six assists. Aisha Sheppard tacked on 22 points and Kayana Traylor chipped in as well with 19 points.

The Virginia Tech offense was impressive from three-point land, knocking down 11 threes on 29 attempts. Amoore hit four treys for the Hokies in the contest.

How It Happened

After falling behind 17-8, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 3:42 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from D'Asia Gregg, to narrow its deficit to 17-13. North Carolina answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Hokies down 21-15 entering the second quarter.

Virginia Tech then started off the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Sheppard, to narrow its deficit to 21-20. North Carolina responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Hokies trailing 37-31 heading into halftime.

After intermission, Virginia Tech cut its deficit to 45-43 before going on a 7-0 run to grab a 50-45 lead with 31 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tar Heels had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 50-48 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

North Carolina proceeded to take a 66-63 lead before Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run to seize a 69-66 lead with two seconds to go in the fourth. The Tar Heels then fought back to even things up at 69-69 and send the game to overtime. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

North Carolina then snagged a 74-73 advantage with 2:36 left in the first overtime before Virginia Tech responded by going on a 10-0 run to seize an 83-74 lead with 1:14 to go in the period. The Tar Heels narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 87-80 win.

More Records Set
The 87 points scored by Tech and the 167 combined points from both teams today are the most in a Virginia Tech ACC Tournament game. The Hokies went 11-for-29 from behind the arc and 22-for-27 at the line, both make and attempts are new records. The 18 assists in the game also set a new mark for the Hokies in an ACC Tournament game.

The Hokies shot 50.9% from the floor in today's game against the Tar Heels. In the game against Clemson yesterday, they shot 58.7% from the floor. This marks the first time that Tech has shot 50% or better from the floor in their first two games of an ACC Tournament.

Individually, Georgia Amoore was a perfect 6-for-6 at the line tying the free throw percentage record by a Hokie in ACC Tournament play. The best free throw shooting percentage in an ACC Tournament game for a Hokie is held by Nare Diawara who went 9-for-9 in 2007 against North Carolina. Amoore also set the Tech record for minutes played, playing all 45 minutes in an ACC Tournament game.
