Baxter makes The Bowerman watch list debut

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Bowerman award announced its third watch list of the track & field season, with Rachel Baxter making her debut on the list.

The Tech graduate student earns her first appearance on The Bowerman shortlist after falling in the receiving votes category last time it was announced. Baxter becomes the third Hokie to appear on the watch list for the prestigious award, joining Queen Harrison-Claye, who won the award in 2010, and Marcel Lomnický in 2013. Among the ten women featured on the list, Baxter is the only pole vaulter.

The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009 and is named after former University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female NCAA track & field athletes in the nation. The award will be presented in December following a voting period over the summer.

Baxter claimed NCAA and ACC pole vault titles during the indoor campaign, setting new ACC and school records twice with her clearance of 4.61m (15' 1.5") at the ACC Championships and 4.62m (15' 1.75") at the NCAA Championships. The Orange, Calif. native boasted a perfect record throughout the season, winning all seven competitions in which she took part.
