BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Alexa Milius collected four RBIs to help lead the No. 6 Virginia Tech Hokies past the North Carolina Tar Heels 9-1 on Sunday.
Senior Keely Rochard (12-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (21-3, 9-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing one walk and striking out six.
Milius went 3-for-3 with a home run and a walk in addition to her four RBIs for the Hokies. Her RBI single in the fifth inning served as the game-winning hit as the Hokies run-ruled the Tar Heels in five innings.
Sophomore Cameron Fagan compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Senior Mackenzie Lawter also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Milius and a two-run single from Lawter.
The Tar Heels narrowed the lead to 5-1 until the Hokies expanded their advantage in the second. Junior Kelsey Bennett's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Virginia Tech scored twice, which brought the score to 7-1 in favor of the Hokies.
Virginia Tech kept North Carolina without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Milius.
Virginia Tech held the Tar Heels without a run before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Milius, bringing the Virginia Tech advantage to 9-1. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies took the run-rule victory.
