Hokies earn No. 5 seed in Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament Sunday evening

INDIANAPOLIS – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team learned their postseason destination Sunday night as the NCAA bracket was revealed live on ESPN. The Hokies (23-9, 13-5) will be the No. 5 seed in the Spokane region, matching up with the 12th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast (29-2, 15-1 ASUN) on Friday, March 18 in College Park, Maryland.
 
This will mark the second consecutive NCAA berth for the program and the 11th appearance overall.


 
The Hokies enjoyed a historic season, finishing tied for third in the ACC with a 13-5 record, posting the most wins in the conference portion of the season since joining the league in 2004. Tech defeated five ranked teams this season, a new program record including taking down two in back-to-back contests for the first time.
 
In addition to team milestones, several individuals made headlines. Center Elizabeth Kitley won the ACC's Player of the Year award as well as the Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year. She is a finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award and a semifinalist for the Naismith Trophy. Kitley also earned an ACC All-Defensive Team nod.
 
Graduate guard Aisha Sheppard was a Second Team All-ACC performer and Second Team All-Tournament selection. Sheppard become the ACC's all-time leader in 3-pointers on February 13. A few games later, she passed VT Hall of Famer Renee Dennis and became the program's all-time leading scorer. She is now the only woman to wear maroon and orange to score 1,800 points.
 
PG Georgia Amoore, became the first Hokie to ever be recognized as a First Team All-Tournament performer after her stellar play in Greensboro. The sophomore was also an Honorable Mention All-ACC pick. She is third in the conference in assists and had the second-highest shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
 
Kayana Traylor also earned postseason accolades as she made the All-Tournament Team's Second Team. The senior guard scored the 1,000th point of her career against Clemson on Feb. 8.
