Lemley matches career-high in strikeouts in No. 6 Hokies 8-1 victory against Syracuse

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Freshman Emma Lemley was dealing on Friday, striking out 16 Syracuse hitters over seven innings of work to help power the No. 6 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Orange 8-1.

In addition to her 16 strikeouts, Lemley (7-1) tossed seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking one for Virginia Tech (17-3, 5-0).

Senior Mackenzie Lawter led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBIs. Senior Darby Trull provided some firepower at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Freshman Bre Peck also contributed, going 2-for-3 for Virginia Tech with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Virginia Tech got an RBI single from Peck, scoring sophomore Emma Ritter from second base.

The Hokies then held the Orange scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Sophomore Cameron Fagan's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Virginia Tech scored twice, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Hokies.

Syracuse narrowed Virginia Tech's lead to 3-1 before the Hokies stretched the advantage to 5-1 in the fourth inning. The Hokies produced a two-run frame, punctuated with an RBI triple from Trull.

Virginia Tech held the Orange scoreless before expanding their lead in the sixth inning. The three-run frame for the Hokies was puncuated by a two-run homer from Lawter, bringing the Virginia Tech advantage to 8-1. The score remained 8-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies clinched the series.
