Johnson Jr. paces three Hokies in red figures in Puerto Rico

DORADO, Puerto Rico — Connor Johnson Jr. led three Virginia Tech men's golfers in red figures as the Dorado Beach Collegiate concluded Tuesday in Puerto Rico. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was hosted by UNC Greensboro at TPC Dorado Beach (par 72, 7,112 yards).
 
Johnson Jr. finished at 6-under 210 (68-72-70) to tie for seventh. It was his first top-10 of the season. He had two eagles in his final round to tie for the tournament high.
 
Daniel Azallion tied for 12th at 5-under 211. The junior racked up a team-best 15 birdies over the three days. Drew Brockwell also concluded the tournament in the red, tallying a 2-under 214 to tie for 22nd.
 
Tech finished sixth as a team, totaling a 12-under 852 (288-278-286). UNCG won the team title with a 29-under 835, four strokes ahead of Drexel. The Hokies notched the third-most birdies in the field with 63, trailing only Drexel (65) and UNCG (64).
 
Nick Lyerly of UNCG, ranked 28th by Golfstat, topped the individual leaderboard at 14-under 202, one shot clear of Drexel teammates Angelo Giantsopoulos and Drue Nicholas.
 
Tech plays its third tournament of 2022 next week at the Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by USC Aiken. The two-day event begins Monday, March 7 at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina.
