BLACKSBURG, VA --Aisha Sheppard scored 23 points and Azana Baines added 20 and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team defeated the Clemson Tigers 73-42 at home Tuesday.
Sheppard and Baines' stellar scoring performances led the Hokies (17-6, 9-3) in the contest. Sheppard tacked on five rebounds and five assists and Baines added seven rebounds. Georgia Amoore also helped out with 14 points, four assists and two steals.
Virginia Tech utilized excellent ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 18 assists on 28 made field goals. Sheppard's five assists paced the Hokies and Cayla King also added four assists of her own.
Virginia Tech's defense held Clemson to only 15.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 27.6 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-7, Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run with 4:12 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Sheppard, to take a 14-8 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-10 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
Virginia Tech built that first quarter lead to 18-12 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 7:58 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Sheppard, to increase its lead to 24-12. The Lady Tigers cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 29-25 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 15 points.
Following intermission, Virginia Tech continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 33-27 before going on a 9-0 run to expand its lead further to 42-27 with 6:49 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 54-35 edge. Virginia Tech turned two offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring 25 total points in the quarter.
Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 63-41 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Amoore's three, to grow the lead to 73-41 with 40 seconds to go in the contest. The Lady Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-42 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
