NOTRE DAME, IN --The Virginia Tech women's basketball team got a 26-point showing from the bench, but fell 68-55 to the No. 20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road Thursday.

Elizabeth Kitley led the Hokies (15-6, 7-3) with eight points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Kayana Traylor also added 16 points from the bench and Azana Baines chipped in as well with six points and eight rebounds.

The Virginia Tech defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 13 Notre Dame turnovers. Those takeaways turned into seven points on the other end of the floor. Traylor's one steal led the way individually for the Hokies.

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-2, Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run with 8:10 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Cayla King, to take an 8-4 lead. Notre Dame then responded to tie things up at 18-18 heading into the second quarter. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.

The Fighting Irish then took control in the second quarter and the Hokies entered haltime behind 34-24.

Virginia Tech's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hokies faced a 48-36 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.

Virginia Tech came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kitley's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 48-41 with 8:54 to go in the contest. Notre Dame responded and outscored the Hokies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 68-55. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
