BLACKSBURG, VA --Aisha Sheppard hit a dagger 3-pointer with 1:03 left in the game to put Virginia Tech ahead 66-59, and the Hokies earned a 70-63 win over the Miami (FL) Hurricanes at home Thursday.
The Hokies (21-7, 13-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Elizabeth Kitley, who had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Sheppard tacked on 16 points and four assists and Emily Lytle helped out with 12 points from the bench.
Virginia Tech out-rebounded Miami (FL) 37-30 in Thursday's game, paced by Kitley's 12 boards.
Virginia Tech forced 14 Miami (FL) turnovers. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Cayla King led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 10-9 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 3:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kayana Traylor, to increase its lead to 15-9. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 20-18 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.
Miami (FL) rallied to take a 23-20 lead before Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:50 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Lytle, to take a 28-23 lead. The Hurricanes then came roaring back to take a 30-28 lead heading into halftime.
Miami (FL) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-45 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from D'Asia Gregg, to grab a 50-49 lead with zero seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 54-52 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 60-52 with 6:06 to go in the contest. The Hurricanes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-63 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
