ATLANTA – Virginia Tech overcame first-half shooting difficulties to grab a much-needed 62-58 win against Georgia Tech on Wednesday night.
The Hokies (17-11, 9-8) had three players score in double figures, as Keve Aluma notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Darius Maddox tacked on 12 points off the bench, most of which came from a stand-alone 10-2 run by Maddox in the second half. Nahiem Alleyne also had 12 points, knocking down three 3-pointers.
Virginia Tech had its best offensive rebounding performance of the season, hauling in 15 offensive boards that resulted in 14 second-chance points. Aluma led the way on the glass with 10 rebounds, while he, Justyn Mutts and Sean Pedulla brought in three offensive boards each.
How It Happened
Virginia Tech started the game shooting 1-8 from the field with a Nahiem Alleyne 3-pointer opening the scoring. Georgia Tech responded with a 9-0 run, its largest of the half. Until Mutts' dunk with 12:19 remaining in the first half, Alleyne was the only player to score for the Hokies. Despite struggling from deep, shooting 3-14, a perfect outing from the free-throw line (7-7) kept Virginia Tech in the game and only trailing 34-30 at the half.
After intermission, Virginia Tech came back to even it up at 41-41 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Maddox's jumper, to seize a 48-41 lead with 9:50 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still held on for the 62-58 win. Virginia Tech capitalized on seven Georgia Tech turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.
