BLACKSBURG – Tuesday's baseball game between Virginia Tech and ETSU was cancelled due to rain and declared a no contest with the Hokies trailing the Buccaneers, 1-0, entering the bottom of the fourth inning at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
Per NCAA rules, game statistics from Tuesday's affair will not count. A decision between the programs to reschedule the game will be made at a later date.
Virginia Tech (3-0) and ETSU (3-0) survived 55 minutes of action before play was halted midway through the fourth inning at 4:57 p.m. Both teams proceeded to enter a one-hour, 43-minute rain delay prior to the game being officially called at 6:40 p.m.
Tech was denied a hit through three innings against the Bucs' right-hand starter, Landon Smiddy, who recorded five strikeouts on 36 pitches. Despite Nick Biddison opening the game with a seven-pitch walk, the Hokies' lone base runner of the afternoon was erased courtesy of the visitors' inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play.
After picking up the final out of Sunday's 10-4 victory against UNC Asheville, fifth-year left-hander Ryan Kennedy posted two scoreless frames for Tech before running into trouble in the third inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, Kennedy was lifted for reliever Jackson Ritchey, who surrendered the game's only run-scoring play: an RBI single to Cam Norgren.
Jonah Hurney struck out the ETSU side during the fourth inning before weather suspended the game.
