Tech, UVA set for Big Monday clash inside Cassell

BLACKSBURG – For the first time since Feb. 18, 2019, Virginia Tech and Virginia are set to meet on "Big Monday" as the two in-state rivals go head-to-head in their second meeting of the season Monday at 7 p.m. inside sold-out Cassell Coliseum.

COMMONWEALTH CLASH PRESENTED BY SMITHFIELD

  • Following a halt during the 2019-20 academic year due to COVID-19 implications, the Commonwealth Clash has been renewed and has a new presenting sponsor in Smithfield. The Commonwealth Clash is a friendly, statewide rivalry between Virginia Tech and Virginia and their school-sponsored sports, with 22 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11.5 points or more has been annually crowned the winner and takes home the Commonwealth Clash trophy, presented by Smithfield.
  • Currently, Tech leads the Clash 5-1.5.


MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS

  • Maroon Out! Fans are encouraged to wear maroon as the Hokies look to beat UVA at home for the second straight season.
  • We'll have a special recognition of Hokie Nation's Drive for 25 accomplishment.

THE SERIES

  • UVA owns a 96-57 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to Feb. 20, 1915.
  • The Hokies fell 54-52 to the Cavaliers in the first meeting of the season on Jan. 12 in Charlottesville.
  • Tech snapped a four-game losing skid in the series last season, defeating the No. 8 Cavaliers 65-51 inside Cassell Coliseum.
  • The Hokies are 30-24 against UVA in Blacksburg.
  • A half point is up for grabs in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash. Tech currently leads, 5-1.5.
  • Tech and UVA are set to meet on "Big Monday" for the first time since Feb. 18, 2019 (UVA won 64-58 in Blacksburg).


A WIN WOULD...

  • Mark the Hokies' sixth straight ACC win and their longest winning streak of the season. It would be the longest winning streak for Tech in ACC play in program history.
  • Be Coach Young's second win over UVA as head coach of the Hokies (1-3).
  • Snap Virginia's four-game unbeaten streak, which is tied with Notre Dame for the second-longest active win streak in the ACC behind Tech's five-game streak.
  • Move the Hokies to 5-0 in February. The last time they opened February 5-0 was in the 2009-10 season.


HOKIE HEADLINES

  • Justyn Mutts registered just the second triple-double in program history Saturday night vs. Syracuse, finishing with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists.
  • Tech is shooting 41.5 percent from three this season, which is on pace to break the school record of 40.3 set in the 2016-17 season.
  • The Hokies (61.9) and the Cavaliers (59.6) rank second and first, respectively, in scoring defense among ACC programs.
