BLACKSBURG – Justyn Mutts recorded the second triple-double in program history on Saturday night in Virginia Tech's 71-59 win over Syracuse.
Mutts put up 12 points, 14 boards and 11 assists, including eight assists in the first half. The Hokies (15-10, 7-7) were led by Keve Aluma, who put up 20 points, two steals and two blocks, and by Hunter Cattoor, who tacked on 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Virginia Tech shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 20 assists on 23 made field goals. This marks the third time in six games that Tech had 20 assists in a single contest. Mutts' 11 assists led the Hokies and Darius Maddox also chipped in with three assists of his own.
Virginia Tech did a great job disrupting Syracuse shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Aluma's two rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
Cattoor scored the first nine points of the game for Tech off three 3-pointers. The two sides then exchanged buckets for the better part of the half. After falling behind 26-24, Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run with 4:15 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Mutts, to take a 31-26 lead. The Hokies then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 39-29 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 39 points.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 65-54 with 1:02 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 71-59 win. Virginia Tech took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 32 points in the lane.
