BLACKSBURG, VA --Cayla King hit a dagger 3-pointer with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter to put Virginia Tech up 70-61, and the Hokies secured a 73-63 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at home Thursday.
The Hokies (18-6, 10-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Georgia Amoore, who had 21 points, six assists and two steals. Elizabeth Kitley added 18 points and two steals and Kayana Traylor chipped in as well with 14 points from the bench.
The Virginia Tech offense made hay from deep, making nine threes on 15 attempts. Amoore hit five treys for the Hokies in the contest.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 12-7 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run with 4:05 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kitley, to increase its lead to 18-7. The Hokies then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 22-11 advantage.
Virginia Tech built that first quarter lead to 28-16 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 5:55 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Traylor, to increase its lead to 36-16. The Yellow Jackets cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 39-21 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
After intermission, Virginia Tech held on to its advantage and owned a 54-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Traylor's layup, to grow the lead to 72-61 with 32 seconds to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-63 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
