Hokies welcome in new year in Cassell

Hokies vs Mountaineers

Blacksburg, Va. – The No. 10 Virginia Tech wrestling team will host visiting Binghamton and West Virginia in the first team meet action of the new year on Sunday in Cassell Coliseum.

In light of recent developments, the three teams will be participating in a round robin format for Sunday's event. Binghamton and West Virginia will square off at noon followed by the Hokies taking on Binghamton then West Virginia immediately thereafter. Action will be available to be streamed on ESPN+ with a subscription. All live updates will be available on @HokiesWrestling twitter account. 
 
Tech is coming off a 1-2 showing at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Niceville, FL, picking up a win against Hofstra but falling to No. 6 Arizona State and No. 11 Cornell. The Hokies stand at 4-3 entering the second half of the season.

Tech hosts Binghamton

  • Head coach Tony Robie and the No. 10 Hokies welcome Binghamton on Sunday for their eighth dual of the season. Robie began his head coaching career at Binghamton in 2005.
  • Tech is 3-1 against the Bearcats all-time. The most recent meeting in 2019 at Binghamton with the Hokies coming away with the 47-0 victory.
  • Binghamton features three ranked grapplers in their lineup ahead of Sunday's dual meet action – No. 32 Anthony Sobotker (133), No. 12 Louie Deprez (197), and No. 20 Joe Doyle (285).

 
Hokies set to face West Virginia in Black Diamond Brawl

  • To end the tri-meet event, Tech will face next state over foe West Virginia at 4 p.m.
  • Sunday will mark the 26th meeting between the two programs; Tech holding the 12-11-2 advantage in the series. The teams' last meeting was in 2020 when Tech won 24-10 in Morgantown.
  • The Mountaineers field three ranked wrestlers – No. 6 Killian Cardinale (125), No. 11 Peyton Hall (165), and No. 22 Michael Wolfgram (285).

 
Hokies in the Rankings

  • Virginia Tech is ranked tenth in the country this week by the NWCA Coaches Poll.
  • Nine Hokies are featured in at least two of three individual ranking systems this week.
  • Mekhi Lewis, ranked third in two polls and fourth in the other, is listed at No. 14 in the latest pound-for-pound rankings.
  • Ranked Hokies include – No. 16 Sam Latona (125), No. 5 Korbin Myers (133), No. 30 Collin Gerardi (141), No. 6 Bryce Andonian (149), No. 23 Connor Brady (157), No. 4 Mekhi Lewis (174), No. 14 Hunter Bolen (184), No. 33 Dakota Howard (197), and No. 14 Nathan Traxler (285).

 
Century win for Myers

  • Graduate senior Korbin Myers secured a career milestone in the Hokies dual vs. Cornell with his 100th career victory.
  • He joins a list of 13 other Hokies to hit 100 wins, most recently achieved by David McFadden in 2020.
