ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia Tech suffered a setback to VCU in its second match of the ITA Kickoff on Monday.
Despite Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback picking up their second ranked win of the season in doubles, Tech fell 4-2 to the Rams.
The doubles portion of the match was tightly contested, as all three matches went to tiebreaker. Chrysostom and Fishback, and Scott Sculley and Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza, were on the winning end of their matches to give the Hokies their third doubles point in four matches.
In singles, Virginia Tech suffered some setbacks that would prove too much to overcome.
Fishback came up short for the first time this season, while Sculley also fell on Court 4. Ariza offered a lifeline for Tech with a straight sets victory, 7-6, 6-4, on Court 3.
However, Carlo Donato dropped a tight three-set contest on Court 2 and Chrysostom fell in his first singles appearance of the season in three sets, as well, handing the Rams the victory.
The Hokies will return to play at home this weekend with a double-header on Friday, as Chattanooga and Hampton come to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
