Hokies hit the road for first away meet this weekend

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech track & field prepares for its third meet of the season this upcoming weekend as the Hokies travel to Lexington, Va. for the VMI Winter Relays.
 
After two consecutive weeks of competition at home in Rector Field House, most of the Hokies' track and field squads will take a weekend to rest and prepare for the Doc Hale Elite Meet the first weekend of February.
 
For the athletes competing, action begins Friday at 1 PM with the men's weight throw and resumes Saturday at 11 AM with the women's shot put. The two-day meet will not be broadcast, however, live results will be provided by Snap Timing.
 
Competition will be held in VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, with parking and admission available for spectators. For those attending, please comply with COVID-19 protocols established by VMI and the SoCon.
 
Tech will join 25 other schools in competition at the Winter Relays: Charleston, Concord, Eastern Mennonite, Elon, Ferrum, Hagerstown CC, James Madison, King, Methodist, Milligan, Montreat, Mount Olive, Mount St. Mary's, PSU-Harrisburg, Radford, Richmond, Roanoke, Saint Francis, Shenandoah, Southern Virginia, Tusculum, UNC Pembroke, VMI, Washington & Lee, and Winston-Salem State.
 
The first USTFCCCA rankings of the season were released Monday, Jan. 14 with Virginia Tech ranked No. 13 on the women's side and No. 14 on the men's side. The Hokies are the only ACC team to feature both men's and women's squads in the top 20 of the initial national rankings.

ATHLETES TO WATCH
 
ACC shot put champion Essence Henderson makes her season debut in the women's shot put this weekend. It will be her first appearance for the Hokies since she competed in the shot put and discus at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.
 
Joining Henderson at the VMI Winter Relays are five other athletes: Khalil Bedoui, Alexios Prodanas, Lucy Brookover, Erin Kelleher, and Marley McCall. Bedoui and Prodanas will compete in the men's weight throw, and the three women's pole vaulters will compete at 2 PM on Friday.
 
LAST TIME OUT
 
At the Hokie Invitational, Tech exploded to 11 event wins and three school records across the two-day meet. Following their performances in the 600m and heptathlon respectively, Barbora Malíková and Jake Spotswood both earned ACC Performer of the Week honors. Ten Tech athletes rank in the top ten of their respective events nationally after two meets of 2022.
