Hokies begin team workouts

BLACKSBURG – After a few weeks of voluntary workouts in the new year, the Virginia Tech football team finally had its first official team work out on Monday, under the direction of director of strength and conditioning Dwight Galt IV.

The fast-paced exercises were aimed to make the players more explosive while adding strength, and today's focus incorporated bench press, hang cleans, rows and more.

"Today went really good with Coach Galt, who brings a ton of energy and is a good guy," defensive back Nasir Peoples said. "It was great to get back working with my teammates and I'm excited to improve."

Galt, who just completed his strength and conditioning staff, will lean on guys like Peoples, a veteran, who is experienced in the weight room and will teach up the newcomers on what it takes to lift at a high level once you get to college.

"I think the best way is to lead by example, first things first," Peoples said. "Then show up on time and get to work. I believe the young guys will follow."

One thing that Galt preached to the team was when a group was finished with an exercise circuit and another group wasn't done yet, for the group that was finished to get some more work in, with extra reps and, "Find things to do."

Those little things seek to be the foundation for this team, as it enters its first season under head coach Brent Pry. To go above and beyond.
