Defensive effort not enough as Virginia Tech loses to No. 4 NC State 51-45

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech women's basketball team held NC State to just 32.4 percent shooting from the field, and a season-low 51 points, but fell 51-45 to the Wolfpack on the road Sunday.

Elizabeth Kitley led the Hokies (14-5, 6-2) with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Georgia Amoore tacked on 13 points, six rebounds and four assists and Cayla King helped out with six points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-5, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run with 2:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from King, to take a 13-10 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 13 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Amoore, to increase its lead to 18-12. The Wolfpack then came roaring back to take a 26-20 lead heading into halftime.

Virginia Tech's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hokies faced a 38-25 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech knocked down one three-pointer in the quarter to score three of its five total points.

Virginia Tech kept the Wolfpack from increasing their lead before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Kayana Traylor's layup, to shrink the deficit to 47-45 with 2:11 to go in the contest. NC State responded and outscored the Hokies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 51-45.
