DURHAM, NC --The Virginia Tech women's basketball team went into halftime trailing Duke 32-25, but fought back from the deficit to beat the Blue Devils 65-54 on the road Thursday.

The Hokies (12-4, 4-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Elizabeth Kitley, who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Aisha Sheppard added 13 points and Georgia Amoore helped out with 10 points.

Azana Baines pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Virginia Tech, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.

The Virginia Tech defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 14 Duke turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into seven points on the other end of the floor. Kitley's two steals led the way individually for the Hokies.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Kitley, to take an early lead with 8:12 left in the first quarter. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.

The Hokies could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-25.

After intermission, Virginia Tech cut its deficit to 44-41 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Cayla King, to grab a 46-44 lead with 2:06 to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 21 third-quarter points.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Sheppard's three, to grow the lead to 60-50 with 2:05 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 65-54 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 19 points.
