CHAPEL HILL, NC --Elizabeth Kitley registered a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to the No. 19 North Carolina Tar Heels 71-46 on the road Sunday.

In addition to Kitley's double-double, the Hokies (11-4, 3-1) were led by Cayla King, who totaled eight points, and by Emily Lytle, who added six points coming off the bench.

Led by Kitley's four offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in four second chance points.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hokies continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 35-17 halftime deficit.

North Carolina continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 53-21 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kitley, to trim its deficit to 53-28 with 33 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech took advantage of three North Carolina turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.

North Carolina kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 63-35 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run, finished off by King's three, to shrink the deficit to 63-41 with 3:15 to go in the contest. North Carolina responded and outscored the Hokies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-46. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
