Virginia Tech earns 3-2 walk-off win over Toledo

BLACKSBURG, Va. --The Virginia Tech Hokies rallied to score one in the ninth inning and walked it off with sophomore Nick Biddison at the plate to pick up the 3-2 win over the Toledo Rockets Saturday.

Sophomore Graham Firoved (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (26-17). The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing one walk and striking out four. Junior Anthony Simonelli also made an impact on the mound for the Hokies, starting the ballgame and throwing 7.2 innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on three hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts.

At the plate, the Hokies were paced by senior Tanner Thomas, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double, a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Cade Swisher furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-1 with a double. Freshman Gavin Cross also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies were trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Thomas put Virginia Tech on the board with a leadoff home run off sophomore Kyle Jones.

The Hokies kept the Rockets off the board before tying it up in the eighth. Virginia Tech scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Cross, which brought the score level at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when Virginia Tech walked it off when freshman Fritz Genther came across to score.
