BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 23 Virginia Tech Hokies broke through after a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning to beat the Boston College Eagles, 4-3, Saturday.
Freshman Matthew Siverling (4-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (15-9, 11-7). The southpaw went 1.2 shutout innings, giving up two hits. Senior Jaison Heard also pitched well, going three shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out one.
In the batter's box, the Hokies were paced by freshman Gavin Cross, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman TJ Rumfield put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Kevin Madden also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies were trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech's offense produced a three-run output that included back-to-back homers from Cross and Rumfield.
The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when the Hokies got going again on offense. Madden came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Hokies. The score remained 4-3 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech held on for the win. 79 90 51 5 4
