CLEMSON, S.C. --Freshman Fritz Genther collected four RBIs to help propel the No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies over the Clemson Tigers 11-3 on Saturday.
Senior Jaison Heard (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (10-7, 6-5). The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Sophomore Chris Gerard also made an impact on the mound for the Hokies, starting the ballgame and throwing three shutout innings while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Genther went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and a walk in addition to his four RBIs for the Hokies. Freshman Cade Swisher put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Senior Tanner Thomas also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies scored in six different innings on the way to the win. Virginia Tech broke a 0-0 tie and took the lead for good at 1-0 in the second inning on Swisher's one-out solo home run off of freshman Olenchuk.
