Hokies break school record in 800-yard freestyle relay

GREENSBORO The No. 17 Virginia Tech women's swim and dive team began the 2021 NCAA Championships on a high note with a new school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
 
The team of Emma Atkinson, Sarah Shackelford, Reka Gyorgy and Loulou Vos swam a time of 7:02.73, breaking the previous record of 7:03.10 set in 2017. The Hokies finished in 14th place overall in the event.
 
The relay team improved from their previous best of 7:03.50 which they swam at the 2021 ACC Championships in February, earning them third place in the event.
 
Competition will resume Thursday morning with prelims starting at 10 a.m.. The Hokies will be competing in the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 400 Medley Relay and 1 meter diving event.
