BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's basketball team dives back into non-conference action Wednesday night against Cornell for the first-ever meeting between the two sides.

In Tech's last outing, Keve Aluma led the team in scoring for the second-consecutive game with a season-high 23 points. In his last two contests, Aluma is averaging 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and is shooting .467 from the floor.

Though the Hokies and the Big Red have never met, head coach Mike Young faced Cornell while at Wofford on Dec. 30, 2011. Young's Terriers fell that day, 86-80, as the Big Red shot .714 from beyond the arc. This will be Tech's sixth game against an Ivy League opponent, as the Hokies currently hold a 4-1 record in previous contests.

THE SERIES

  • Virginia Tech will meet Cornell for the first time Wednesday night.
  • This will be the second occurrence of Tech playing an opponent for the first time this season (Merrimack).

A WIN WOULD...

  • Give the Hokies an unblemished 5-0 mark at home in non-conference action this season.
  • Improve Tech to 2-1 after a loss in 2021-22.
  • Give the Hokies a 9-2 record inside Cassell for calendar year 2021.

THE BEST OFFENSE IS DEFENSE

  • While head coach Mike Young is known for cooking up efficient offensive sets and a fine-tuned motion offense, Virginia Tech's defensive numbers have been even more impressive.
  • In the last two seasons, the Hokies have finished in the top half of the ACC in scoring defense.
  • As of Dec. 6, they rank second in the ACC (.11 behind Virginia) and 11th nationally with 56.3 points per game allowed.

UP NEXT

  • The Hokies will face Dayton on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. inside UD Arena (Dayton, Ohio). The contest will serve as the penultimate non-conference contest of Tech's regular season.
