BLACKSBURG, VA --Aisha Sheppard collected 30 points, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to the No. 11 Tennessee Lady Volunteers 64-58 at home Sunday.
The Hokies (7-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Sheppard, who had 30 points and two steals. Georgia Amoore tacked on 12 points and Elizabeth Kitley added four points, nine rebounds, two steals and three blocks.
The Virginia Tech offense was strong from deep, pouring in 12 threes on 29 attempts. Sheppard hit seven treys for the Hokies in the contest.
The Virginia Tech defense was a problem in Sunday's game, forcing 17 Tennessee turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Kitley's two steals led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-6, Virginia Tech went on a 10-0 run with 3:26 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Sheppard, to take a 16-9 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-12 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.
The Hokies could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 27-25.
Tennessee continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 29-25 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Azana Baines, to grab a 32-29 lead with 7:10 to go in the third. The Hokies held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 42-39 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Sheppard's three, to grow the lead to 55-48 with 6:01 to go in the contest. Tennessee then asserted control, outscoring the Hokies 16-3 the rest of the way to hand Virginia Tech the 64-58 loss. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.
