Moments of Excellence: Men's golf alumnus Scott Vincent ties for 16th at Tokyo Olympics

As the 2021 calendar year comes to a close, Virginia Tech Athletics will spend the month of December celebrating the Hokies' standout achievements from the past 12 months in a campaign called "Moments of Excellence."

The "Moments of Excellence" campaign will serve as a look back to the historic highlights and memorable accomplishments in Tech Athletics during 2021. Each varsity sport program will have an outstanding moment featured during December on the official Virginia Tech Athletics website and @HokieSports social media properties.

The men's golf program was represented at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics this past summer serving as their Moment.

 TOKYO — Former Virginia Tech standout Scott Vincent carded three straight rounds in the 60s to tie for 16th at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Kasumigaseki Country Club served as the host site for the four rounds of individual stroke play, which concluded Sunday.

The 2015 Tech graduate, who was representing Zimbabwe, put together a solid finish in his Olympic debut, recording rounds of 67-66-67 to offset his opening-round 73. Vincent's total of 11-under 273 was seven shots off the pace set by gold medalist Xander Schauffele of the United States.

Vincent got his final round going with an impressive hole-out for birdie from a greenside bunker to the right of hole No. 1. He made the turn at even-par before getting hot on the back nine and pouring in four birdies, including two on par-3s. Vincent was among the tournament leaders in several statistical categories: driving accuracy (T7th), scrambling (19th), strokes gained off the tee (17th), strokes gained putting (10th) and total bogeys (T15th).

Entering the event, there were only 10 golfers in the field ranked lower than Vincent in the Official World Golf Rankings. That did not deter Vincent from putting on a show in Tokyo, especially over his final three rounds. Vincent, who became the first Tech men's golfer to compete in the Olympics, was also the only golfer in the 2020 field from the ACC.
