Hokies back to winning ways after road win at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- With a double-double from Keve Aluma and an impressive team-wide defensive performance, Virginia Tech earned a 62-58 win against Maryland on Wednesday.

The Hokies (6-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Aluma with 17 points. Justyn Mutts tacked on 16 points, while Hunter Cattoor chipped in 12 points.

Tech essentially eliminated the three-point threat from Maryland, as the Terps shot 1-13 (.077) from beyond the arc. The Hokies forced 15 turnovers for the fourth time this season, turning those takeways into a pivotal 12 points on the other end of the floor. Mutts and Cattoor both registered two steals.

Aluma pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead the Virginia Tech offense, which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into 15 second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 29-26, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 1:32 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Cattoor, to take a 31-29 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 31 points.

Maryland proceeded to take a 46-42 lead before Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Nahiem Alleyne's three, to seize a 49-46 lead with 5:54 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 62-58 win. Virginia Tech capitalized on six Maryland turnovers in the period, collecting nine points off those turnovers.
