TALLAHASSEE, FL --Elizabeth Kitley scored 34 points and Georgia Amoore added 20 and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team beat the Florida State Seminoles 92-75 on the road Sunday.
Kitley and Amoore's stellar scoring performances led the Hokies (9-3, 1-0) in the contest. Kitley tacked on 13 rebounds and four blocks and Amoore added eight assists. Aisha Sheppard also helped out with 11 points and three steals.
Virginia Tech shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 20 assists on 31 made field goals. Amoore's eight assists led the Hokies and Kayana Traylor also chipped in with four assists of her own.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-10, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 3:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Amoore, to tie the game at 15. Florida State then pulled ahead, sending the Hokies into the second quarter down 24-20.
Virginia Tech then cut the Seminoles lead to 36-33 before going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to take a 43-36 lead. The Hokies proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 46-38 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.
Following intermission, Virginia Tech continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 60-49 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kitley, to expand its lead further to 65-49 with 1:26 to go in the third. The Hokies held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 68-52 edge. Virginia Tech's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 22 third-quarter points.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 79-58 with 5:29 to go in the contest. The Seminoles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 92-75 win. Virginia Tech got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 24 total points.
