DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team took a 3-0 setback to Duke Sunday afternoon, falling 25-22, 25-22 and 25-17. With the win, Duke is now 15-10 overall and 6-8 in ACC play. The Hokies fall to 10-16.
The first two sets were battles for the two teams as the Hokies had a 15-12 lead during the second set. The Blue Devils battled back, tying the match up at 18-18. An ace from Elayna Duprey tied the game back up at 20-20 but Duke used a 5-2 run to take the second set and a 2-0 lead over the Hokies.
The Blue Devils had their most dominating set in the third, taking the lead at 14-13 en route to a 25-17 third set win to clinch the match.
Leading the Hokies was graduate student Griere Hughes, recording 10 kills on the afternoon. Freshman Kellen Morin was also strong offensively, tallying seven kills and hitting .308, a team high. Defensively, Logan Mosley had nine digs while Hughes added seven. Brie Postema ended her match with 27 assists.
For the Blue Devils, Ade Owokoniran and Georgia Stavrinides were both in double figures with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Mackenzie Cole had a solid match on the back line with 18 digs while Camille Nazor added 35 assists.
The Hokies return to action next Friday, hosting North Carolina at 4 p.m. Friday's match will also serve as Tech's senior day, honoring seven Hokies.
