The eighth-seeded Hokies (10-4-3, 3-4-1 ACC) clinched their spot in the quarterfinals after Jack Dearie's golden goal winner in overtime on Wednesday night against ninth-seeded Boston College (6-7-2, 2-4-2 ACC).
Virginia Tech and Pitt (10-4-1, 5-2-1 ACC) met on Oct. 29 in Pittsburgh for both sides' ACC regular season finale. The Panthers took advantage of the Hokies going down to 10 men in the 23rd minute after a Sivert Haugli red card and were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Daniel Starr found a late consolation goal in the 87th minute, as Pitt came out with a 4-1 victory.
The Hokies hope for a tighter contest on Sunday with Haugli expected back in the lineup. Momentum will also be at the Hokies' backs after snapping their three-game losing streak against ACC opponents in Wednesday's match against Boston College.
Sunday's contest will mark Tech's fifth-consecutive ACC quarterfinal appearance – an accomplishment that only Wake Forest and Notre Dame share. The Hokies have appeared in seven previous quarterfinal matches, with their only win coming against Maryland in 2007. Virginia Tech is 0-4 all-time against No. 1 seeds in the ACC Championship.
The game will be broadcasted on the ACC Network with Alex Perlman and Richard Broad on the call.
