Fourth quarter run powers Virginia Tech past UT Martin 54-49

San Juan, Puerto Rico --The Virginia Tech women's basketball team broke open a 42-42 tie to end the third quarter and beat the UT Martin Skyhawks 54-49, aided by a standout defensive performance at Saturday.

The Hokies (6-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Elizabeth Kitley, who notched a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kayana Traylor tacked on 11 points and D'asia Gregg added seven points and two blocks.

Virginia Tech did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

The Hokies used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 30-24 edge. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.

The Hokies had lost that lead by the end of the third quarter and entered the fourth frame with the score tied 42-42. Virginia Tech knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.

Virginia Tech kept it close before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Georgia Amoore's jumper, to seize a 50-44 lead with 3:18 to go in the contest. The Skyhawks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still held on for the 54-49 win. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 12 points in the paint.
