No. 8 Hokies drop close 17-13 match to No. 9 Ohio State

Blacksburg – No. 8 ranked Virginia Tech wrestling dropped their dual competition slate opener in a nail-bitter of a 17-13 against the visiting No. 9 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in Cassell Coliseum Friday night.
 
The Hokies (0-1, 0-0 ACC) won four matchups Friday night, but six won by the Buckeyes (2-0, 0-0 Big 10) secured the dual for the visiting squad. No. 4 Mekhi Lewis – wrestling for the first time in Cassell since his injury last season – prevailed in a top-10 matchup over Ethan Smith.
 
Tech makes a quick turnaround to face visiting Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 1 PM in Cassell Coliseum.
 
Match Notes

  • No. 4 Korbin Myers got the Hokies on the board first with a 10-2 major decision victory over Dylan Koontz. With the win, Myer's moves to 5-0 on the season and puts his career wins count at 94.
  • Connor Brady improved to 5-1 on the season with a controlling 3-2 decision victory over Bryce Hepner.
  • Lewis returns to Cassell floor with a victory and at a new weight. The 2019 national champion secured a 6-3 victory over No. 6 Ethan Smith in the highest ranked match of the evening.
  • No. 9 Hunter Bolen secured a 7-1 decision over No. 21 Rocky Jordan, racking up over four minutes of riding time. The win improves Bolen to 6-0 on the season.
